Here is a composite of a SeaWIFS pass at nearly the same time as the NOAA AVHRR pass. Originally designed to observe ocean surface properties, termed "ocean color," this satellite with its numerous short wavelengths is excellent for observing dust storms. SeaWIFS has the advantage of high spatial resolution (1 km), so it can show intricate detail over the dust plumes.

The color composite here uses three channels; the 670 nm as "red," 555 nm as "green," and 412 nm as "blue." The image reveals how the plumes emanate from wind scouring over small, dry lakebeds.
