Discussion

In the atmosphere and in models (and even in the oceans!), thermal anomalies of dynamically large-scale disturbances persist and the winds (or in oceans, currents) adjust into balance with that thermal structure. Conversley, dynamically small-scale disturbances spread out, appearing weaker, and the mass field comes into balance with the remaining winds.
