Viewing Antarctic Features with OLS and AVHRR Visible Imagery (Page 2 of 4)
Return to the previous menu.
This is a zoom of the AVHRR visible image shown earlier. There are several features shown: land areas of the Antarctic continent, which are covered with a deep sheet of ice, a floating ice shelf, which is attached to the continent, a dark, open-water region (polynya), and pack ice over the ocean. There are also clouds, especially in the northwestern portion of the image. In the AVHRR image, the clouds are so thin that ice features can sometimes be seen through the clouds. This is a characteristic feature of many clouds in the Antarctic and Arctic regions.
