Zooming the AVHRR images shown previously helps reveal the contrails. It is especially helpful to zoom the split window difference image. Look, for example, at the contrails revealed off either coast of Italy, including the double contrail off the west coast. Nevertheless, even zooming doesn't help reveal the contrails in the IR image or the visible image.

The AVHRR split window is especially useful to detect contrails for two reasons. First, the AVHRR data comes at a high spatial resolution. Second, the difference of the two IR channels that make up the split window (11 and 12 µm) is particularly sensitive to thin cirrus, including contrails.
