Defining the Climate Analysis Process

When handling requests that require climate information, the Climate Analysis Process will help you define your needs so you obtain the most useful information as quickly as possible. CAP consists of the following steps:

Step 1: Identify the needs of the situation.

When given a specific request, such as when to hold airdrop maneuvers, you need to figure out what decisions need to be made, what questions need to be answered, and what climate variables are involved.

When assigned to a new area, you need to figure out what you need to know to become familiar with its weather and climate. What information needs to be gathered?

Step 2: Explore the area's physical setting and basic climatological information.

This includes its geography, elevation, topography, climate, and weather patterns.

Step 3: Refine the climatology questions.

With an understanding of the area’s physical setting and climatology, you can hone in on the climate variables and statistical parameters involved in the situation. This will prepare you for the step, exploring the products. You’ll be ready to focus on the particular information that you need to gather.

Step 4: Explore the climate products and interpret the data.

Step 5: Resolve the situation.

Contact the customer with the information requested.

Submit a Support Assistance Request (SAR) to the 14th WS if you have remaining questions or needs.

Submit daily observation forms (AF form 3813/3803 or FMF 3813) to the 14th WS if you are working in an area with little weather and climate information so they can develop a detailed climatology.

We will explore the Climate Analysis Process in more detail on the following pages. Note that when applying the process to the scenarios in the module or those encountered on the job, it’s a good idea to take notes. The situations can be complex and there are often a variety of things to keep track of.
