Principles of Convection II: Using Hodographs

I agree with @vcavaliere, discuss storm types associated with hodograph types.
herbster 2020-12-30 13:34:13

I believe the scale is wrong on the exercises, answer key is potting 10 m/s segments, but the concentric circles are 20 m/s

Excellent lesson.
vcavaliere 2018-12-05 20:51:28

Would be nice if you talked more about what kind of storms curved hodographs, straight, etc. represent and why

Nice lesson to learn basics about hodographs with an idea about their connection with storms motion

One improvement that could be made is to put the "determining storm motion" section before the "ground-level vs. storm-relative winds" section.

can you please include signature on the certificate?

More background information needed.
Torchaser1023 2018-05-17 09:55:06

A bit backwards in instruction -- would be better to explain how to do things first without first discussing the end result and then backtracking to explain how they got that information.

this lesson really got me it is very hard at least to me... better breakdown and more explanation would help
TennisTahoe 2018-03-08 14:28:47

This was for a grade

Great lesson

Super confusing. Need more backround information than provided.

this is on the job training for me.

Good lesson with good visual representations.

This was an awesome lesson on Convection and Using Hodographs. You will love it.
prendek 2017-10-31 21:12:13

Never quite grasped the hodograph and this helped. 2017-09-18 17:07:28

Good Lesson
wtvisser 2017-08-06 06:14:26

Very informative and good format 2017-07-26 23:27:00

The Hodograph visuals and exercises were instrumental in applying demonstrated knowledge of the lesson's training. 2017-07-13 11:22:16

I think this lesson will be very useful as a future meteorologist! I think I could benefit from using hodographs in everyday life.
bcom 2017-07-02 06:38:10

Very interesting lesson.
AustinDE94 2017-05-17 11:30:51

Never understood Hodograph's until now, I thought it was something extremely complicated but this makes it seem quite simple.
donald.sheen 2017-05-09 23:45:31

Very good lesson. It is a little technical so a complete study of the lesson is required.

I have to say I struggled with the lessons present as preparation for the quiz. I would respectfully suggest that this lesson may have tried to do a little much a little quickly
KD9CZR 2017-03-17 09:34:03

an interesting course that helps a lot with understanding how to use Hodographs
mahughson 2017-02-14 20:40:09

words words words
wxgeek97 2017-02-14 12:44:53

Again I feel like it needs to be more of a beginner level. A lot of stuff was briefly explained and I had to turn to the internet for help
SS109Penatrator 2017-02-07 14:22:46

more explanation on the polar setup.. some coordinate systems are reversed.

Although this is a "Skill 1" module, DO NOT be misled into thinking you will be done in 10 minutes. This is a difficult module so be prepared to put some real time and effort into it and take the quiz more than once. However, the benefit is once you have a working knowledge of how to read it, the information will serve invaluable to you and adds one more tool to your forecasting arsenal especially if you deal with a lot of convective weather situations. It's worth it!!!
EQ 2015-03-22 13:12:50

I had to do twice with over 2 pages of notes but I am someone with prior training, hard for a level one but it is certainly worth going through if you want to learn how to read a hodograph.
weathergeek21 2014-12-26 09:27:52

I also retook the quiz several times to get the certificate. I found the module challenging, but interesting and it helped me to understand a great deal about storm structure, prediction, and vertical wind shear. Even with a prior understanding of these factors, I gained more knowledge than I thought from this lesson.
blackvoidsrevenge 2014-11-06 01:05:16

I retook the quiz several times to get the certificate. While doing so, I notice a discrepancy for the true/false question "If the wind changes both direction and speed with increasing height, the resulting hodograph will always be curved." Each time I answered "true", which was sometimes scored as correct, and sometimes scored as incorrect. Aside from this, I rather enjoyed this module.
reddolphin 2013-05-14 16:53:00

Chaining vectors on a polar chart is not an intuitive process for most of us. This module had some good interactive drills embedded in the presentation. Would like to have seen at least one more dealing with repositioning the axes to isolate storm motion and storm relative winds.
