July 2014: This module describes analysis problems that can result from assuming that errors in the background field starting the analysis are symmetric around the center of the error. While this assumption is still made in some models at NCEP, others use systems that combine flow-dependent errors and those from the old method above. As of early 2014, the GFS uses the newer method (Hybrid EnKF-GSI) while the NAM-B uses the older method (GSI).
