One question about hurricane forecasts in the quiz for me question 13. Seems to be an error an perhaps a question from a different course offered through this site.

There is an error with a question about hurricanes that somehow ended up in the Quiz. For me it was question 1, and it did make the difference between pass/fail.

You need to be able to see what you got wrong. Not just the score but your wrong answer and the correct one. This is a major flaw in this system.Other than that, a little dry but an okay lesson

First off, how is "horizontal continuity" the measure of gaps? That's a completely idiocentric crap interpretation... Do you even know what continuity means? Secondly, your pictures are shit... and i've found 2 lessons now that completely negate aspects of the test in the coursework.... this is one of them

This module is also fun because, of watching the fire science videos.
It is scary to think that most grass and shrub environments are pretty flammable.

I liked the side nuggets of information about the case studies of California and also the information about 53 fuel models.
It was challenging understanding how fuel moisture was calculated. It didnt have an equation. it only said that it could be expressed as a percent and that it involved its bone dry weight and that it could be more than 100% still confusing.

As has been said in other reviews, the content in this lesson is very good and informational, but the pictures are subjective and misleading. Some of them could have more than one answer depending on variables and what you can actually see on some of the very small pictures. When I took the quiz for Unit 3, three of the questions involving matching photo images with descriptions had no photo images because the link to the photo failed. I have run many Browns' transex plots in the field and am in total agreement that the test, the sample pictures, and the lesson presented here were not only ambiguous but confusing. With no reference as to size of blow the down (1000 vs. 100 vs. 10 hour etc.)and ladder fuel heights that in no way could even remotely pose a crown threat in such a sparse canopy, how can we not be frustrated?
bbrenz001
2015-11-30 09:45:26
The module was put together fairly well. But the downfall of this lesson was the use of the ambiguous photos of fuel arrangements for the test questions.
Also same feedback as jspriggs and cdaviscourt: the test questions regarding fuel characteristics contribution to ignition, intensity, and spread directly contradict the exercise given in the module
cdaviscourt
2015-10-20 15:37:53
Same feedback as jspriggs: the test questions regarding fuel characteristics contribution to ignition, intensity, and spread directly contradict the exercise given in the module (I suspect this is an error in their grading key?). Same issue with the "to what degree will various fuels be consumed" questions. Good module, but disappointed to see that they have not improved the test/grading key after the feedback they have received.

It was the best 5 exam takes i ever had - you have to be really, really sharp and put yourself inside the pictures to really identify correctly the expected scenarios of fire spread ..kudos !

The quiz section is absolutely terrible. I am dreading the rest of the course because of the past 3 quizzes.
The quizzes don\'t tell what is answered correct or incorrectly. The only information given is that the full points weren\'t received for the question. How does this help anyone learn?
[Editors note 2014-05-06: Per our sponsors\' request, quizzes on MetEd are designed to measure understanding of the content of the module. They allow multiple tries, so that learners can reflect on their answers, review the content they missed, and try answering the questions again.]

Pictures of fuels and fuel arrangements were ambiguous. There would have been better reviews for this section if there were simple illustrated images rather than pictures that could be considered multiple fuel types. The questions where you have to choose multiple, one or none of the options for these pictures really screwed me up on my score too. I am glad that there have been real life examples provided, yet the choice of these examples was horrible.

Some pictures for the test are not clear because they don't illustrate an obvious option. Many have fuel characteristics that are ambiguous. Also the questions regarding which of the 7 characteristics of fuel affect Ignition, Spread, and Intensity do not reflect what was presented in the exercise.

The photos of fuel types are self explanatory in the lesson, but then in the quiz they are not. This makes the test less effective. The information provided in the lesson is well constructed.
1. Identify and describe basic wildland fuel characteristics.
2. Identify and describe seven characteristics of fuels that affect wildland fire behavior.
3. Identify and define by size class the four dead fuel timelag categories used to classify fuels.
4. Describe how fuel availability is essential to predicting wildland fire behavior.
5. Describe the fuel model concept and identify the 6 primary groups that the fuel models are organized into.
6. Using visual cues, identify the surface fuel group that is most likely to carry fire spread and the aerial fuel characteristics that may support crown fire.
