Ocean Acidification

Ocean Acidification
After completing the lesson, the learner will be able to do the following:
  1. Describe the observed and projected records of atmospheric CO2, oceanic dissolved CO2, and ocean acidity (pH).
  2. Describe the chemistry of ocean acidification with respect to calcium carbonate minerals calcite and aragonite
  3. Describe the marine carbon cycle
  4. Describe the impact of increased CO2/acidity on the distribution and abundance of calcifying organisms (e.g., plankton, algae, coral, mollusks, echinoderms)
  5. Describe ecological impacts independent of calcification, including effects on reproduction and behavior, and ecosystem shift
  6. Describe the impact of increased CO2/acidity on green algae
  7. Describe the prehistoric record of climate and ocean acidity (pH) and its relation to mass extinction events
