In the Living Room

It's 8:00 PM in the evening on Sunday, July 30th. This is your first day visiting the Castillo family. You're standing in their living room. The window blinds are open and it's starting to get dark outside. You go over to the TV to check the weather forecast...

After listening to the weather forecast, you can't believe it when you notice the Castillo's golden retriever, Hugo, standing near the couch, wagging his tail, and holding an empty blue duffel bag in his mouth!

Packing the Duffel

You run to tell Camille's dad, Gilbert, about what Hugo is doing. He comes into the living room and starts chuckling, "Ha. Hugo's got out our disaster duffel!"

Gilbert continues, "I guess it's time to make sure our kit is ready in case a hurricane really comes."

Gilbert explains, "We keep this duffel bag ready during hurricane season with stuff we might need whether we stay home during a storm or evacuate. Camille, could you and your friend go to the big closet and get the disaster duffel packed?"

Help Camille pack the disaster duffel.

Now that you've helped Camille pack the disaster duffel, you decide to explore around their home some more. You wander down the hall and discover their office.

In the Office

As you enter the room, you immediately notice a laptop computer on the office desk. There's also a printer, a bookshelf, and a corkboard with a calendar, and two interesting charts. The first is labeled "Atlantic Hurricane Tracking Chart."

The second chart is labeled "Okaloosa County, Florida. Hurricane Evacuation Zone Map, Plate 1."

You decide to sit down and check out the Castillo's computer.

On the Laptop

There are two big icons on the computer screen, and they both seem really interesting. One of them looks like a map with a hurricane on it and says "Storm Track". The other shows a sideways picture (probably taken from space) of a huge hurricane with the words "Hurricanes & Tropical Cyclones". Follow the links to check them out. You'll need this information when you work on today's Worksheet.
