Hurricane Evacuation Zone Map

A local map of Okaloosa County, Florida, where Fort Walton Beach is located. Along the bottom of the map is the Gulf of Mexico. A row of barrier islands and sandbars, shaded dark blue, separates the Gulf from the mainland. The beach and coastal areas are all shaded yellow. Areas farther inland and surrounding an inner harbor, are shaded red. The remaining areas of the map, farther inland from the red-shaded areas, are unshaded. A color-coded legend indicates:

  1. Areas of water (light blue).
  2. Evacuation zones for category 1 hurricanes (shaded dark blue).
  3. Evacuation zones for category 2 and 3 hurricanes (shaded yellow).
  4. Evacuation zones for category 4 and 5 hurricanes (shaded red).

There are two handwritten sticky notes stuck on the map. One reads, "Colored areas show where hurricane storm surge may cause flooding. Our flood zones are fairly narrow due to the steep continental shelf and barrier islands. Other cities can have much greater flooding."

The other sticky note says, "Aunt Betsy always evacuates because she lives in a mobile home. We live in the red zone and only have to evacuate for a Cat 4 or 5."
