The weather report begins to broadcast on the TV:
"Good afternoon. This is Steve Lyons with a live Weather Channel
update on what has now become Tropical Depression Erin. It is 4:15 PM
on Friday August 4th. All hurricane and tropical storm warnings have been
discontinued. Erin's winds have weakened below tropical storm strength.
However, it remains dangerous, and it continues to deposit copious amounts
of rain."
description
"Erin is now that large swirling mass of clouds centered over northwest
Mississippi. Heavy rains and possible flooding can be expected from Erin
as it continues to move north. But, for residents of southern Alabama
and the western Florida Panhandle, the impact has passed, and many evacuees
are returning to their homes to inspect the damage."
description
"This chart shows Erin's track and current location. Although Erin
was only a category 1 hurricane when it made landfall in Fort Walton Beach
yesterday, its winds and rains were still strong enough to cause significant
damage. Damage has been reported for more than 2000 houses in the Pensacola
area and many crops have been damaged or destroyed. About 100 houses were
damaged in Alabama."
"Apparently, this storm caught many people in the Pensacola area
unprepared even though predictions of Erin’s strength and movement
were quite accurately forecast. When people heard on Wednesday that Erin
had weakened to Tropical Storm strength after crossing the Florida Peninsula,
they simply went to bed. Imagine their surprise on Thursday morning to
learn that a full-blown hurricane was bearing down on them! Hopefully,
that wasn't the case for you!"
"Stay tuned for further updates on Erin and other tropical storms
we're tracking in the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Eastern Pacific!"
