Hurricane Strike!

Preparing to Evacuate

Conversation with Camille's Aunt Betsy

Camille on the phone. description

Carla dials a number on the phone, then says, "Hi Betsy, this is Carla. Listen, they've just issued an evacuation order for your area. Gilbert is on his way over right now to check your tie-downs and shutters. He also took a gas can in case your car needs a little extra gas. In the meantime, you have to get ready to leave. Get a piece of paper and write down these instructions so you can remember them."

What should Aunt Betsy do first? (Choose the best answer below.)

  1. Go.
  2. Unplug the non-essential appliances.
  3. Get the valuable things off the floor.
  4. Gather evacuation kit and valuables.
  5. Put perishable food in the freezer and set her fridge and freezer to the coldest setting.
  6. Review the evacuation plan.

"Betsy, the first thing you should do is turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting, and put as many of your perishables as you can into your freezer. Hopefully some of the stuff will keep for a while even after the power is shut off."

Carla continues, "Get your evacuation kit and any important papers you might need. Don't forget your purse, credit cards, ID cards, and important legal documents like your insurance policies. Also, don't forget your toothbrush, glasses, hearing aid, cane, and your medicines. Put this stuff in your trunk so you'll be ready to go as soon as possible."

Carla continues, "Betsy, do you remember the evacuation map we made for you last year? You need to get that and follow it to go to the emergency shelter. Remember, don’t drive by the coast and don’t try to drive over any flooded streets or bridges!"

Carla continues, "Since you live so close to the beach, there's a chance of flooding from the storm surge, so try to get your valuable things off of the floor. Put your antique chairs on the table and get your oriental rug off the floor. Try to keep things high and dry!"

Once Aunt Betsy finishes everything she and Carla have talked about, she's ready to go!

Carla continues, "Betsy, try to get everything done as quickly as possible, OK? If you need to get in contact with us, call Uncle Bob in Chicago. Don’t worry about us, we’re well-prepared for the storm. We’ll try to call you at the shelter after the storm passes. Good-bye, Betsy. Take care!"
