The blue line in the middle of the graph below is NHC's best prediction of the wind speed at different times. The highest wind speed expected is about 115 mph in the 36-48 hour forecast period. However, there is a 30% chance the winds will be between about 100 and 125 mph and a 10% chance they will be between 85 mph and and 145 mph during that period. The smaller the distance between the NHC forecast and the outer edges of the probability lines, the more confident the forecasters are in their prediction (as in the 0-12 hour forecast). Conversely, the greater the spread, the lower the confidence, as indicated by the increasing spread after about 12 hours. The same information is conveyed in the table at the bottom of this page.
