Inland High Wind Watches and Warnings
When a tropical cyclone is expected to remain at or above hurricane strength well inland, high-wind watches and warnings for hurricane-force winds are issued to call attention to the threat. WFOs issue an inland wind watch when hurricane-force winds are expected to occur beyond coastal areas-even though the actual occurence, time, and location may be uncertain. A warning is issued when hurricane-force winds are occurring, are imminent, or have a very high probability of occurrence. A warning is used for conditions posing a threat to life or property. Some WFOs include the high wind information in short-term forecasts (called NOWs), while others include this information in their hurricane local statements or severe weather statements. |
