Tech Notes

The following information is provided to ensure the proper operation of this course. Please read this entire document.

Resolution

The optimal screen resolution setting for this module is 1024 x 768. It will run at 800 x 600, but some of the high resolution data viewing applications will not be fully functional. Running at screen resolutions higher than 1024 x 768 may make some graphics and animations appear too small for some users. See the Help application available for your operating system for instructions on how to change screen resolutions.

For optimal use, we recommend operating with your browser window at full screen (i.e., click the maximize button). In addition, you may want to turn off your toolbars (via the View menu).

Browser Compatibility

This site requires both Java and JavaScript to be enabled. See your browser Help for instructions on how to change these settings if they are currently disabled. If you receive error messages or find non-functioning pages, this may indicate that you need to enable these capabilities.

This module was tested in several versions of Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer. Although the behaviors will not be identical, the module should be functional in the latest versions of both (Netscape 6.2; Internet Explorer 6.x) on either Windows or Mac operating systems. Older browser versions are not recommended. Operation under Unix browsers was not fully tested. Unix systems may require you to set specify fonts of a larger size than the default.

Navigation

This site uses frames! Avoid using the Back and Forward functions of your browser unless instructed otherwise. Use only the navigation available in the left-hand navigation bar while you are using the module.

To navigate to another Web site, always return to the Homepage for "Australian Severe Thunderstorm Case Studies" first. In some browsers, navigating outside the site from within the module may leave you without a scroll bar.

Many pages contain links to data and other information that will appear in a new browser window. This is done to allow you to easily read supporting text and assessment items while viewing the data. Please close these windows when you are done using the information they contain. (Some are designed to close automatically.)

Running Other Programs

We strongly suggest that you close all other applications while you use this module. Browsers require a significant amount of processor capacity, so the usability of the module will be compromised if you run other applications simultaneously.

Data-Viewing Applets

The case studies in the module employ several types of Java-based data-viewing applets to substantially recreate the operational forecasting environment. You must have Java enabled on your browser to use these. Many of the data loops they contain are very large, and will take up to several minutes to upload at slower connection speeds.

Instructions for using the individual applets are available within the module.
