WelcomeThe new Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Forecast Team Page presents training modules that are especially relevant to those with responsibilities for forecasting weather associated with this exciting event.

New Fire Weather Training

As fire seasons across the country become more active, the COMET Program introduces a new Advanced Fire Weather Forecasters Course addressing topics in fire behavior and fire weather. Several of the modules in the course are highlighted below.

Fire BehaviorFire Behavior provides a comprehensive overview of the three main dimensions of the fire environment triangle: fuels, topography, and weather.

Fire Weather ClimatologyFire Weather Climatology and Critical Weather Patterns represents geographic variations in the fire season and patterns conducive to severe fire outbreaks.

Stability, Smoke Management, and Fire Weather ForecastingStability, Smoke Management, and Fire Weather Forecasting looks at how forecasters evaluate the potential impact of atmospheric stability on fire behavior and smoke dispersion.

Mesoscale Meterology Effects on Fire Behavior

Mesoscale Meteorology Effects on Fire Behavior focuses on the effects of thermally induced winds in complex terrain on fire spread.

This module reviews microwave remote sensing concepts as they apply to land and ocean surface applications.

Dams and Dam Failure - Module 2: The St. Venant Equations, Modeling, and Case study

This second module in the two-part series expands on the science explaining catastrophic dam failure and flood-wave prediction methods associated with these events.

North Wall Effects on Wind and Waves

North Wall events refer to high wind and wave events that occur along the north edge of warm, fast, western boundary currents. This module will explore the relationships between atmospheric stability, winds, waves, and ocean currents.
